"Good job people. After many months of hard work and planning, the rover is now ready to be sent on one of the most spectacular missions in the last decade - landing on Mars... Now let's strap on this 15 $ webcam to film the landing."

How was it even possible to enchant it this much? This is insanely good work.

The camera is called MARDI and it is a "point and shoot" camera not video camera. 4fps is actually pretty good for a regular camera. It is designed to be able to take pictures in variable light conditions at a wide range of distances and pick up a good range of colors to determine features. NASA uses it to figure out exactly where they landed, relative motion against the ground to check with the other sensors, and to help with precision landing for future missions. It does just what they need!
