  • Just YOUR opinionated opinion. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, owns any aria. That point is NOT open to any argument. Why should Kathleen OWN this aria? Any aria, and I mean ANY aria, can be sung by anyone, and I mean ANYONE - even you, pedrofibreiro.

You might get a long way when you stop thinking that Kathleen is the only one entitled to sing this aria, simply because she does NOT own it.

I agree that Danielle's performance is not perfect. She is popular though because she adds excitement to it.

  • @ClassicalRelated You mean Kathleen Battle? She sings it like it was written by Verdi. Dreadful. This Version is much better.

  • @HConstantine Yes, I mean Kathleen Battle, in response to pedrofribeiro, who thinks Kathleen owns this song. Which I find nonsense. Nobody, not a single person, no matter how gifted, owns ANY song. ANY song can be performed by ANYone in ANY style.

I for one like this version by Danielle and Floris.

  • I rip on Netrebko just like everyone, but I truly can't understand people's beef with De Niese. Perhaps she isn't as good as she is famous, or anything extraordinary, but her technique is solid and her voice pleasant. She's no Damrau or Gruberova, etc., but who is? I almost think people would like her music better if they didn't know it was her.

  • Hi Katherine,

Many thanks for your positive reaction. My own feeling is that Danielle's voice is so powerful that it tends to drown emotion. Because of that, many people are inclined to think there is no emotion at all.

But it is the very power of her voice that has won over many people, including me!

  • Does anyone know what time of year this took place? Singing around water, in the evening, is death on voices, and I see people in the audience wearing jackets, so coolnness and dampness+trouble. Ms. De Niese got her "break" much too young and has some flaws in her training which are most evident in these disciplined Baroque piece (ie.heavy vibrato which often causes her to wobble off key). She has such great stage presence though that she will always have a good following in the opera house!

  • @suzanneetmoi

The concert took place in August 2009. In Holland, it can be damp at that time, even if it is high summer .... :)

  • Thank God SOMEONE around here actually knows what they are talking about for a change. Thank you for posting this! You are correct, her performance is not perfection, but her technique and enthusiasm make her a joy to behold!

  • 3:17 - 3:20 is just pure beauty :)

  • she is a young goddess

  • All ye who do not like Danielle...post yourself singing in the way you think it should be done.

    Let's make it fair.

  • Brava. Bella voce.

  • @HConstantine Ok, Battle sings it as if it was written by let's say Mozart, it's a pity. But please listen to it another time, he recording with marsalis remains in spite top. I love de Niese so bad, she undoubtedly is one of the great, but give her some other year or two to reach the top.

  • @KatherineXIX I agree with this point but I love De Niese's vocals. Honestly, who do you know that can do that? She's quite a talent. For every artist you hear, there's probably someone out there better...but if we consistently compare, we are consistently let down. I think she's radiant.

  • Great singer. I just think the tempo is a little to fast for her to do anything colorful with it.

  • @ClassicalRelated She is a well trained singer, shhe does what she is supposed to do, sing pleasantly with great skill and control, I agree that she does not carry as much Gravitas as Gruberova, nor does she demand as much attention as Damrau etc. but the fact remains that she, technically, performed this piece perfectly. I liked it. Also frankly, I'm VERY impressed at the Trumpet soloist. Dude is skilled and gonna go far.

  • De Niese is a wonderful young singer with a voice that cannot be compared to Sutherland, Battle, Fleming or Gruberova. They all have different qualities. Each is unique in its own way. I love the freshness and youth that De Niese brings to Handel arias. Despite the criticism, she is very well trained to this point (early 30's?) and no doubt, still learning. I think she has excellent breath control.
