" THE OBSESSION OF APOSTATES
Opposers will often speak out against Jehovah's Witnesses or any other group that has major doctrinal difference from them any time the group's name comes up. These do not generally obsess over any particular group unless they themselves feel particularly threatened by that group. Apostates, on the other hand, are an obsessed lot. They are not satisfied with turning people away at every mention of Jehovah's Witnesses, but they spend every moment of their free time obsessing over turning people, particularly individual Witnesses themselves, away from the organization. The time they should be spending on preaching the word of God, they instead spend it turning people away from the only true God. Why the obsession? Are they concerned with the welfare of others? Are they demonstrating a humanitarian outreach? Are they trying to prevent some major catastrophe? Are they trying to be helpful with the religious choices of others? Or is it simply malicious intent? The answer may surprise you.
WHAT IS APOSTASY?
The word "apostate", from the Greek "apostasis", means to "stand away". This is the opposite of the word "apostle", which means one that is "sent forth". The word "apostate" can also indicate one who "draws away", from which we get the definition of an apostate as being one who seeks to draw others after themselves. These are rarely content with simply choosing another religion. They are more interested in making sure others have no part of the religion from which they left.
The word "apostasy" and its related words are used in the New World Translation and other Bibles to translate the Greek word "hairesis", you may know as "heresy". The word "hairesis" indicates a group or party, as a political party, who is lifted up from the source. This suggests that those in this party are seeking to have others be a part of their party and believe themselves superior. So why do some translations use "apostasy" instead of "heresy"? Because, in the middle ages, the word "heresy" came to be associated with any teaching contradictory to the Catholic church's dogma and continues to hold such a stigma. However, the word "apostate" has no such association and is widely understood as having a meaning congruous with the original language intent.
Jehovah's Witnesses apply this term only to those who have actually been members of the congregation, whether in the first two centuries or in our modern day. A religion can be formed as an apostasy by apostates, while many of its individual members may not themselves be apostates because they themselves have never been part of the original congregation. A teaching can also be defined as an apostasy. It would be unrealistic to try to safeguard members from exposure to apostate teachings, so the Scriptures only give restriction against having any communication from or to an individual apostate. (2 John 10-11) But we should also seek to help others to escape apostate teachings, so we must have familiarity with apostate lies so that we can be equipped to free innocent ones from the snares of the apostasy of false religion. The epistles directly addressed several apostate teachings."
