This is an old English ballad. Joan Baez recorded it years ago and I fell in love with it when I was a teenager. It is so simple and lovely. Of course. Baez played guitar along with it but since I have no musical talent with instruments, that is out of the question.

  • Sounds like you might like my favorite musican/singer/songwritter. Loreena McKennett. Check her out on youtube. Recommend "Dante's Prayer", "Lady of Shallott", "She Moved thru the Fair". Last two are written by WB Yeats, Tennyson. I think you'll be pleasantly suprised. You have a lovely voice.

  • Thank you for your kind comment. I have two of her CDs. Some dear friends gave us one of her CDs back in the early/mid 1990s. She sometimes has such a haunting voice, doesn't she? I will check out the others you mentioned.

  • I too have been singing this in the car or the shower (not nearly as prettily though) since Joan Baez recorded it. It reminds me of Ulysses returning from the Trojan wars in disguise to see Penelope has been faithful.

  • Leslie, thank you for your kind comment. I think your Ulysses image is great!

  • beautiful song sang very well xx

the coy,but cheeky smile leads me to believe you were singing it to someone in particular yourself :-) xx

  • dearjonboy, hmmm...cheeky smile, huh? LOL! I wasn't, I promise, singing it to anyone in particular!

  • Actually, quite nice. Can imagine you singing to your kids.

  • To sing so sweetly, & Acapella to top it off… What a gift you have! I have come back three times, to hear you sing. Thank you…

  • Very sweet and real rendition. Lovely.

  • You have no talent with the guitar? Nonsense! It is so easy to play. Joan Baez uses just a few easy chords. You will come to love your guitar and never want to put it down! You can learn to play in one day! Honest! Take care!

  • I don't think it is fair to blame Odusseus for the "women" he slept with since Kirke manipulated him so that sleeping with her was the lesser of two evils and Kalupso in my eyes straight up raped him. Consider it, both were goddesses and if he had not complied with them they could have done such things as to prevent him from ever returning home and that would certainly be much much worse.

  • charming.

  • Of course, Odysseus was not nearly as faithful as Penelope, having spent years shacked up with, inter alia, Circe and Calypso. We don't know if John Riley was of the same persuasion or not!
