Suze explains how student loan crisis is looming as the next big thing. She says the real estate implosion and banking crisis including the credit crunch have not yet been dealt with well. She implores Congress to head this one off at the pass as our young people are being saddled with compounding interest at such a rate that very quickly the loans become insurmountable. The show took place on 1/24/09.

  • @romanmel1 What's the alternative to not going to college? Working at a factory or plant or some low paying job all your life? The fact that we dont have enough people graduating from college is one reason why the U.S. is falling behind other countries. That's why they have to keep bringing foreign engineers and professionals here on work visas, because there is a deficit of Americans with the credentials. Most jobs of the future will require some kind of education or at least tech skills.

  • They probably at least need to lower the interest rates on the government loans. The rate on my loans is 6.8%, which is high, when compared with the rate on average mortgages and other government loans. There are people with mortgages paying less interest than the average student loan holder. This would be expected from private student loans, but the government shouldn't be trying to make over people going to school.

  • @DHarri9977 The short answer to your question is YES, you are a slave to the government with student loan debt. Suze Orman is misguided in putting the blame on congress. The parents need to restrain their kids from taking on crushing debt that will make their lives miserable. Love your kids? Encourage them to NOT go to college...find an alternative.

  • What will be interesting as a result of a student loan crisis is the fact that many larger companies invest hedge funds involving securities which include student loans that are bundled into these type of investments. Will we the people become indentured servants to the US government as a result of these loans given the fact that many companies are willing to hire less educated employees for less money in today's climates.

  • our country is screwed... im writing a neo-constitution and bill of rights for when it falls apart "P plus student loans yea youll get a degree.. but back in the 50's obviously college was cheaper.. but the only time people took out a loan was for a home... and homes are more valuable then Schrödinger's job ( the job that could or could not exist)

  • Peter Schiff and others like him have also warned about the student loan debt crisis en route soon. It is bigger than credit card debt!!! If Oblunder opts for a bailout, then the taxpayer gets screwed even more and I'm speaking as one who is in student loan debt for grad school only.

  • wtf was that

  • do not fucking go to law school. law school is exhibit A of this problem.

  • psh....Larcus, any job you can get at 21 that pays your way through college....is not paying your way through a very good one. I don't know too many jobs willing to pay a 21 year old 30,000+ a year which is what most colleges will run you. Or too many colleges that you can pay for on a $15/ hr or less paying job that you probably have. Stop trying to be impressive.

  • @LacusTheDestroyer

I've work my way through my first 5 years of college all on my own. However, going to a cheaper college isn’t the end all answer nor is stopping to save up. Life “gets in the way” and many cases some people can’t go back for various reasons. There is nothing wrong with needing help and there is also nothing wrong with going to a school that one thinks would benefit them. However, I guess this discussion is over. But I enjoyed our chat.
