A Poem 4 My Mother from POETRY: a hip hop album by Christopher K.P. Brown

Lyrics:

Hey, this is Chris
yeah, Im doing alright
how are you?
been eating
doing alright
what you been doing
been reading
been getting out of the house
thats good
yeah, Im doing alright
tryna study more

It all started for you on September 7, 1946
the second daughter of Anzelene and Johnie L. Jones
bringing you home to my aunt Reevelyn
and I know youve come a long way
since living on Vaugine Street
as a student, you went away for college
made the transition from being the student
to being the teacher but to me
what you were the best at
was being a mother
being my mother

expressed love, care, and concern for you baby boys
and even though were grown, were still your baby boys
and even though I may stray, Ill always love you mother
this is from the bottom of my heart, a poem for my mother

Left home for a while
gave birth in Tennessee to my older brother
not yet a single thought of me
dont know the whole story
but I know you had to leave
came back to Arkansas, single handedly raised that seed
that seed would grow to witness your struggles first hand
but through the struggle you taught that seed to be a man
but then another man came along
and thats when I came along
and you were left with two boys
cause soon that man that helped make me, he was gone
so with two hard heads leaning on your shoulders
you kept moving forward
worked that nine to five just so we could survive
even took that promotion when I was around age five
which meant you had to go to Dallas
I still remember that
stayed with my grandparents until you came back
but before you left you bought me this game called Hot Shot
there was this game called Hot Shot
and I played with it everyday after school
cause, you know, it reminded me of you
cause you was gone
but that was my reminder of you
thats how I thought of you
you know, that was your gift to me
and uhh I look back on it
and I dont know what happened to that game
but I realized that was just another symbol of your love
that was one of the ways you were gone but you were still there with me
you know
I love you for that ma

expressed love, care, and concern for you baby boys
and even though were grown, were still your baby boys
and even though I may stray, Ill always love you mother
this is from the bottom of my heart, a poem for my mother

words cant explain your worth
timesheets couldnt convey this womans work
like the arguments we had about me going to college
you said youd worry about the cash
I just need to get the knowledge
as a teenager I probably drove you crazy
but no matter what the action
you still loved me with a passion
now I can truly say that the hate that was once in my heart is now gone
and I know that you want to move back home
but were just trying to make the situation better for you
like you did for us
mama, we can discuss what youre going through
Im older now
you dont have to hide your pains
I want to share them with you
see were only as strong as the weakest link on the chain

it all started for me on July 6, 1984
the second son of Althedia J. Payne
bringing me home to my big brother, Perry
and I know weve come a long way since 2001 W. Havis Street
as a student I went left home for college
making the transition from a boy to a man
but to me, all the credit goes to you
my mother
my mother, who expresses love, care, and concern for her baby boys
this is from your baby boy
and even though Im growing into a man, Ill always be your baby boy
and even though I may stray, Ill be coming back to you mother
this is from my heart
a poem for my mother.
