She was young, in a great marriage with baby number two on the way. Then she got the bad news. A rare cancer had formed in her pelvis. Getting rid of the cancer would mean not only removing part of her pelvis, but also part of her spine and her entire left leg. For treatment, Janis Ollson went to Mayo Clinic where doctors performed a first-ever reconstructive operation in hopes that she would walk again.

  • God bless you.

  • "She hopes her expirience will help others in the same situation-"

Is she planning on other people to have that rare cancer in a similar spot with enough money or health inusurance to cover it?.... right... ill place a $50 bet that it wont happen again in your lifetime.

  • Damn. What a beautiful beautiful story; it's so nice to hear something so daring has a happy ending (a la Chilean miners, etc.). Wishes for the family, and congratulations to the brilliant doctors who saved her!

  • Why did the Ollson's need to raise so much money for her surgery-related expenses? Why did she have to fight so long and hard with her doctors? Why did SHE have to do so much of the research in finding a Dr. and facility that could help her. I thought that the Canadian system pays for EVERYTHING. If she wasn't able to raise all that money, and do all that research...... she'd likely be dead today! But i'm sooo glad that she's not.

  • God bless this brave woman, her family, and the medical team that saved her life...regardless of the country they come from.

  • @pattyoplenty Until you know what you're talking about, keep your silly and completely ignorant comment to yourself.

  • responding to your misconception about the Canadian health care system, the articles I've read said that this is a new operation, not yet done on any living person. It takes a while for any procedure to become an accepted method of treatment. In Canada we have a groundbreaking hospital which deals with children's diseases. It is not uncommon for children from other Countries including the U.S. to seek treatment there. Pioneers can be found in many countries, not just yours.
