We demonstrate here the appearance of water flowing, and an unaffected sounding, from beneath the transom of a speeding boat from a slick, unobstructed, polished gel coat bottom surface. Rivets in the hull or slick gel coat makes no difference... the water is a mess back there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AIVGy7_A60

There is an abundance of advice freely given by well-meaning folks about how to mount a transom-mounted transducer. The most common advice has to do with locating a smooth, turbulent-free area of water as it exits beneath the transom of a speeding boat. Further instruction include, from these well-meaning folks, employing a driver while the other hangs over the transom in search of the elusive smooth, turbulent-free water and then, of all things, when you find that spot, you're supposed to mark it. That's just plain mean and inconsiderate. And, we also might hear that if you have rivets in your boat hull, that makes matters worse and even more turbulence and more chance of a troublesome transducer sounding. The truth is, all boats create a royal mess back there, so there is no need to risk injury, or worse, but to follow a few proven basic transducer mounting "RULES" (www.sternmate.com), which apply to mounting a transducer on ANY boat hull and avoid the catastrophe. With all of this great advice, we have asked those who give this sort of instruction to show or tell us just where we can find turbulent-free smooth spot behind a speeding boat. They all seem to disappear when we ask.
