  • China has a more brutal education system.

I think the USA is starting to directly compete with this hellish Chinese education system.

However just because Chinese kids work 3 times harder (and mostly by rote) than American kids, does not mean that the system is right nor should it be emulated in the USA.

The key point that the USA needs to remember and teach the kids is : Work SMARTER NOT HARDER.

Then and only then will US economic advantage be maintained.

  • @whoo689 That's just your school then. I'm only in 8th grade, and the other day I was up until 5 in the morning doing homework, and I don't procrastinate. On average, I'm up until 2am doing homework. It's awful. And obviously, this stuff exists, and it's not healthy. So either your school isn't as competitive, you don't do all of your homework, or you race through your homework and just write crap.

  • FINALLY! Somebody has caught on!

Another thing is that if you don't do it the teachers act like it's A criminal offence or something if you don't do it

  • I agree with everything that they mention... they do exspect us to be superheroes, they do exspect us to do everything right and perfect... its not fair to every single person thats in school. I'm homeschooled for one of those reasons... i honestly think its way easier and i'm more free with myself. I met these wonderful friends that don't care about being popular and they never said "you can't be with us, you're too lame." I experience more and less tests and those stupid heavy textbooks...

  • What about taking the focus off of all the over scheduling, we as parents do to our children? It's not only the stress of their education, but the stress of having to play multiple sports or join several extra organizations. Take the focus of having to be the "best" at everything and put the focus back in to learning and raising well rounded polite caring adults. It needs to start at home.

  • to me its seems that its all about money.

in jobs they want you to be realy smart so they can make the most money off of you.

in college they only allow really smart kids so they can have a higher grade average to get more money.

The rest is just prep to prepare you for how hard it is each year making it harder so they can be more prepared and be more willingly allowed into many colleges which because of the surplus of smart people the college set the bar higher.

  • @whoo689 It's not about having to worry. When I was in elementary school, I knew I had to work hard and do my best. I didn't necessarily care, but I knew what was ahead and what was expected of me. That's what their saying. There's so much pressure at such a young age to prepare young students for the years ahead. So instead of cursing and formulating a poor argument. Think about what I being said a little, and realize the exact situation, not just what you believe it to be.

  • @whoo689 lol I just go 2 a regular public school. It's pretty competitive. For instance, in math, there is regular, advanced, and honors. Being in regular math is considered being rlly stupid, but people in regular math are learning 9th grade math in 8th grade. Anyway, that's good that u didn't get that much hw!! I get so much...

  • Public schools are of course the vast majority of schools in this country, although the ratio of public to private I think is probably a lot higher than, say, Western Europe and Canada (and maybe Asia as well). I don't doubt that there are schools that overwork their students like this; my beef is the claim by this documentary that it's REALLY so widespread and not for a fraction of students at best. Of course, in a nation of 300 million, a fraction can still be a LOT.

  • @jazluva97 Where the hell do you go to school?? o.o I can't imagine a TYPICAL public school (not a charter, prep school, magnet or any of those other specialties) which accepts kids from all backgrounds within the area in this country would be THAT ridiculous with HW. It boggles the mind! Actually, I got straight As and Bs and did just about all my homework. Yes, I suppose you could say my school was 'less competitive' (regular public HS), though. Heh
