http://mediasanctuary.tv http://www.nationalpeaceconference.org Mike Alewitz speaks at the dedication of the 40 foot "Mural to Commemorate the Massacre of Students at Kent and Jackson State May 4 and 14, 1970" before attendees of the United National Peace Conference in Albany, NY on July 24, 2010. The banner depicts the National Guard opening fire on a peaceful anti-Vietnam War protest at Kent State University in Ohio, killing four and wounding nine. Students had gathered in response to President Richard Nixon's announcement that the U.S. had invaded Cambodia--a major escalation of the war in Southeast Asia. The massacre at Kent was followed ten days later with the police barrage of bullets into a dormitory at Jackson State University in Mississippi that left two students dead and an unknown number of others wounded. The shootings at Kent and Jackson, along with deep hatred of the war, sparked a national student strike that was to become the largest political demonstration in U.S. history. Mike Alewitz was a student leader at Kent State, an eyewitness to the massacre and a leader of the national student strike that followed. Produced by the United National Peace Conference Media Project, an initiative powered by The Sanctuary for Independent Media and Hudson Mohawk Indymedia Center.
