  • @Taria Avery Excellent interview and very good advice. I agree with the …"strong knowledge base beyond grooming skills"… statement. To expand a little more on that statement I would like to define "knowledge base".

  • cont....Pet-grooming knowledge base needs to include a study of as pet (breed) health problems, pet physiology and different breed temperaments. Pet-groomers also need to consider the pet’s personality a well as the pet owners lifestyle to determine the grooming needs of a pet.

  • cont....The pet groomers ability to groom a pet depends on the pet groomers understanding to be able to humanely manage and safely care for the pet during different grooming and handling procedures. Unfortunately because pet grooming is an unregulated profession and service, there are no requirements for a groomer to learn much more than how to cut & trim animal hair.

  • Cont... The business of pet grooming in of its self is becoming subject to needed legislative regulations. But until groomers are required State licensing to assure pet owners that a pet groomer has acquired a yet to be defined approved training and a education minimum, there will be no assurance a pet is in the care of a trained or knowledgeable person.

  • cont....Certification by different pet grooming associations has little to do with the grooming needs of pets but more to do with breed grooming and the association’s requirements for certified members. Association Certification should not be confused with the need for State licensing of pet-groomers.
