Wisconsin Parent Association member, previous guidance counselor and Wisonsin Senator presenting the many opportunities and choices upon graduation from the USMMA ( United States Merchant Marine Academy)- you have flight ( flying opportunities) as well.
THE MISSION OF THE UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY is
"To educate and graduate professional officers and leaders of honor and integrity, who are dedicated to serving the economic and defense interests of the United States in our Armed Forces and Merchant Marine, and who will contribute to an intermodal transportation system that effectively ties America together."
The Academy is a national institution, operated by the Federal Government's Maritime Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The Academy's four-year program centers on a regimental system that instills its students - called midshipmen (a term used for both men and women) - with the traits of leadership, discipline and dedication required for a career that typically may include service at sea, maritime employment ashore, and serving as a commissioned officer in a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Captain you are very wrong. As a proud parent of a USMMA grad class of 2000, she sailed for a year as part of her education and training. She sailed in the Atlantic, Med, Coastal waters, played chicken in the ship canal in Texas, and has be in the maritime industry since she graduated. Currently she is a harbor pilot with the Sandy Hook pilots working through the program. Captain as a mariner, I think you should be proud of these cadets and graduates. And yes they can choose the service.

I don't know where this woman is getting 'you can make $18,000 a month' right out of school. I assume she means at a job sailing on a thirds license. If so, I'd need to see pay vouchers before I'd believe that one. I grossed about $11,300 as a vessel master before retiring in January 2010. There's not a lot of credibility here. She's a mom from Wisconsin with no real connection to the maritime business whose daughter never sailed 'day 1' on her license and is now flying for the Air Force.
