Tamaki Primary became an Active Schools at the end of 2008. Active Schools is a SPARC initiative that works to develop a sustainable active culture for the whole school community.
The school has gone through a community consultation process to identify an Active Schools strategic plan for the next two years.
Aquatics is the school theme for Term 1 2009 and after consulting with students it was identified that water safety was an area they needed to raise awareness in. This is also a nationwide problem (Twenty-seven people have drowned in New Zealand so far this year - eight more than the same time last year and the highest number of recreational drownings since 1994 Watersafety NZ)
Sport Aucklands Active Schools facilitators, Water Safe Auckland, Surf Lifesaving and the school worked together to run an interactive evening for all parents and students of the school to reinforce key messages that allow our children to have fun and enjoy the water while still keeping safe.
Over 90 parents, children and teachers attended
Activities included CPR demonstrations, fun water based games/activities for the home, guessing the weight of the weight clothes, identifying beach hazards and judging a postcard competition for which senior students designed postcards around beach education and sent them home with junior students in the school.
The Lagoon Leisure and Fitness Centre in Panmure provided 9 family pool passes to be given away as spot prizes on the night
The evening will be followed by all students attending beach education sessions with Surf Lifesaving
Sport Auckland helps Tamaki to run a Home School Partnership Evening each term to provide community education
