Winner of the 2009 SDLTutorials.com programming contest! Thanks to all of you that voted!

I recently finished my summer project, a space shoot'em up. This was made for SDLTutorial.com's contest in which we had to make a game similar to R-Type and Galaga. This is my first full game made in C++/SDL aside form the usual Pong and Breakout clones.

Screen capture software had a few lag spikes while recording. Sorry!

  • thats sick. How much experience do u have to make that game? I have fairly basic c++ and java programming skills, and want to make a side scrolling game, for fun. i have no experience in sdl and dont really even know what it is. If i read up on tutorials and learn to use sdl. Would it be enough to program a mario type game? if not what should i be looking at? Any help would be greatly appreated. Thanks

  • @mickmos Having a firm grasp on OO concepts should be enough to make a game like this. Possibly a year or so of experience. SDL isn't really too hard to understand. A platformer is a bit more complicated than a shmup.

  • visual c++ or dev-c++???? or....

  • @Nitros8891 I used Dev-C++ back when I made this game, but I've learned to love Visual C++'s debugger.

  • Nice game. What did you use to make the video???

  • Camtasia

  • Object-Oriented, huh? Looks like I'll have a long way to go, then...

  • ive been learning c++ for a month now, i can make a guessing game in command prompt of by heart lol. Its pretty easy, i pretty much learned this in a day i somehow remembered the code its really really straightforward and taught me alot about while loops etc. im doing some sdl now but its so hard to start out with updating image locations and framerates

  • i see ya used 2 layers of background?

  • wow

  • Well done, have you gotten any more done/ made any more games?

  • Good game.

  • wow you are good...

  • @johngeetar Can you send me a link or something for the sdk?

  • @bumrang You don't have to have a mac. You just have to have the SDK and an objective C compiler. Macs are not terrible. They are over-priced, and over-hyped. Buying a mac in my opinion is equivalent to paying to join a fraternity. People feel like it makes them cool without having to do the work. I get your point but macs are not terrible, and you don't NEED a mac to develop for iOS.

  • @johngeetar But you have to have a mac and macs are not that good. let me re-phrase that, THEY ARE TERRIBLE.
