  • Were these some of Matthew Brady's pictures? I attended a re-enactment a few weeks ago about ten miles from here. The noise was deafening, enough to make you want to run away....and there were no bullets flying. With the military tactics used back then, it's a wonder anyone survived.

  • I have been fascinated by the American Civil war after a friend gave me a copy of: "That Devil Forrest: Life of General Nathan Bedford Forrest" by John A. Wyeth a few years ago. Although it was writ at the end of the 19th century (The writing style back then just laid out the fact's like a text book) it was still an engrossing read!...He was a hell of a man, even if history wasn't particularly kind to him.

  • Yes, reading personal letters and books from that era often read like prose. They often used very descriptive and flowery phrases to describe everyday life. My cousin has several letters written by my gggrandfather during the war and they read like poetry, perhaps different than Wyeth's book.

  • No Ben, you where exactly right, the words and phrases used flowed like poetry and prose. I had just used the phrase "text book" because I couldn't think of a better way to describe what I had read at the time you responded...They wrote in such a manner as to challenge the reader (Well, at least the modern reader)

  • American Civil War...that was a bloody one. First photographed war also. Whats the soundtrack?

  • It was the bloodiest war in American history. 600,000 dead on both sides.
