Hugh Mundell: General Info
Member Since 9/18/2007
Band Members With the tragic murder of Hugh Mundell, who was shot and killed while sitting in a car with Junior Reid, in 1983, reggae lost one of its most promising young performers. Mundell's 1975 debut album, Africa Must Be Free By 1983, produced by Augustus Pablo, remains a classic roots reggae recording. Mundell's singing style and soothing voice will lull you into tranquility if you let it. Mundell was still a teenager when he teamed with influential producer Joe Gibbs to record a still-unreleased single, "'Where Is Natty Dread." His first break came when he was hired as a DJ for Augustus Pablo's Rockers sound system. His debut single, "Africa Must Be Free," was released in early 1975. Mundell also recorded several 12" singles as Jah Levi. Beginning in 1979, Mundell took over the production of his own recordings. He also produced the debut album, Speak the Truth, by "Little" Junior Reid, on Pablo's label, Rocker. A dub version of Africa Must Be Free By 1983 was released in 1989. Page provided by Don Bridgman of Rome, New York.
Influences By the end of 1978, Hugh Mundell had a string of hit 45s to his name, as well as a stunning debut album, Africa Must Be Free by 1983, all establishing the teen as one of the most exciting new talents on the roots scene. The bulk of Mundell's records to that date were culturally themed, as the young singer delved into a variety of serious issues, virtually all reflecting his strong Rastafarian beliefs. "My Mind," which featured on his album, as well as seeing release as a single, was one of the rare exceptions. Within, the teen lets his thoughts wander to more personal matters — the girl and the family he has left behind. Producer Augustus Pablo provided Mundell with a propulsive roots reggae riddim for the number, which explains why the teen's thoughts are racing on and on and on. The bustling backing and the singer's sweet, emotive vocals proved irresistible, giving the youngster yet another hit.
