Network Rail is transforming Birmingham New Street into a station fit for the 21st Century.
Backed by Birmingham City Council, Department for Transport, Centro and Advantage West Midlands, the redevelopment will create a world class station for passengers and stimulate regeneration in the heart of the city.
The platforms are pretty disappointing, looks like your just going out and buying some LeylandTrade Trugard masonry paint in brilliant white, but at least the spirit of the old frugal, cash strapped make do and mend BR will live on beneath the glittering facade.

I'm going to miss Pallasades with its smell of cheap sweets, no loitering signs and unfriendly security guards. Can you please assure me that the New New Street will at least still retain a few coach fare home scamsters, bag thieves and pickpockets on its outer extremities?

Despite all the concerns about this redevelopment one thing is for sure, this will be a massive improvement to the the existing site and provide Birmingham with a stunning gateway to Britain's second city.

The trouble is that not an inch of track is being changed. The eastern approach to the station is only four tracks wide. It's a big bottleneck and since it's in a tunnel under the Bullring it can't really be widened.
What Birmingham needs to address the railway problem is a tunnel under the city centre, one that's parallel to the mainline, and the local services could be directed through there. Like the S-Bahn systems in Germany?

@derwent That's inevitable, I'm afraid. There's no room to build a new concourse to the side of the tracks, so it's going to have to be built above the platforms.

Don't like the look of that low ceiling by the shops. Looks like that will feel very cramped and I reckon to really feel like a "new start", it *all* needs to all feel more open like in the main bit.

It is a shame that the vast space with all that daylight is given over for what basically amounts to a shopping arcade. The big problem with the current station, as with New York's Penn Station, is the claustrophobic, lightless atmosphere of the 'underground' platforms. This should have been an ideal opportunity to address that problem. But I guess wide open spaces given over to merely platforms doesn't make money.
