Mongolia Bowl Dance that my group did for 2008's New Year Festival. I haven't been doing much Chinese dance lately and this video brought back a lot of memories... The video source was pretty crappy, but it's the best one that I can find of this dance. At the beginning of the dance, we walk on with three bowls in our hands, and place them on our heads after we spun around and sat down. The person doing the solo at the beginning of the dance was me. Like the Weiwuer bowl dance that I did, this one also did not involve gluing the bowls onto our heads, lol.

  • This looks really nice! Lolz! I haven't been practicing any Chinese dance lately either. Uni is really tough now...

  • Yeah university sucks away all your time. I've been taking a lot of ballet classes lately that replaced my chinese dance time because I simply don't have that much time devoted to dance in a week. Hopefully after exams I'll have more time and get myself back into Chinese dance.

  • GGGGGGAAAAAAAAHHH vicky how do u guys not trip on ur dresses.. i practicing at home and i think i've fallen over about 5 times in the past 10 minutes.. btw its amanda :)

  • That was a beautiful dance!!! As I've said before, you are amazingly talented! I hear you on university being the all consuming! What are you studying, if you don't mind me asking?

  • Yea, after exams I'm going back, too. Currently taking tap dance but I still have another month left before my finals are over at Queens, CUNY. I hear UFT is almost done with finals week...lucky you!

  • Same. If we have the time to prepare in a show (often we don't), we just sit or walk around on demi point (for the Weiwuer bowl dance) to get that feeling right. One of my teacher told me that back when she was in the trope, they used two sets of bowls, one for performance and one for practice where it's taped all around so even if it breaks, you can pick it up and use it again. Lol, this is why I love Chinese dance, ballet don't have this kind of interesting things.

  • lol we did that too :P before our show i hairsprayed the top of my head alot, and left my bowls on my head so that it would leave that groove. its so hard to find that EXACT spot where the bowls feel right.. i could spend 10 mins just standing there adjusting my bowls by the millimeter if i had the time

  • Yeah, I've dropped some bowls... thankfully mostly in practice. One time that I dropped a bowl during performance was when someone knocked it off my head. The Weiwuer bowl dance that I did was the most nerve wrecking one for me though, because there was nothing to support the bowls on the head and there were so many spins in that dance. We used to jam the bowls on our head so hard that they leave a groove on the scalp so it's easier for them to stay on the head. Talk about ouch.

  • lol yea!! cause you have to use the porcelain bowls -__- if somebody drops it...its OVER. XP funny thing is, i never dropped any of my bowls that were on my head, but the first time and only time i ever broke any was when i was doing that thing in the solo where you have two bowls in your hand and wiggle your arms...my hands were sweaty from practicing too much both of them fell LOL :P

  • Because of the bowls, right? There are so many big movements in this dance that you're always afraid that the bowls might fall. Lol.

  • wow you guys did great! hella pro :P i remember the first time we performed it, it was the most nerve wraking performance of my life -___-
