In the U.S., the individual gestation stall for sows is being banned based on perception, not science, and that has Janeen Salak-Johnson, a University of Illinois associate professor in animal science, looking for answers as what is best for the sow from a welfare standpoint. In fact, she believes the decisions being made on the legislative front are premature and could possibly put sows in a welfare compromised situation. science and ethics go hand and hand, that is what the video was trying to get across. we are in the process of having our efficient science supported practices meet also the ethical well being of the animals. having a variety of options available to the producer is far better than federally regulating a single practice. it should be up to the farmer as to what type of housing he chooses, so long as it poses no harm to the well being of the animal.

whatever.... the ag industry needs to learn that science is useless if ethics are not followed. Keeping sows, birds and cattle locked in crates is unethical, and the reason that I will not consume meats coming from these systems. I'll buy my pork from farmers that do not use these inhumane and unethical practices.
