Joan Baez singing "Turquoise" (by Donovan), on her CD "Joan". A beautiful, beautiful song.
Baez, as usual, changes the lyrics: on the first verse she sings "Your eyes", while Donovan sings "Your smile". And she changes "skies" ("shades"), "silence" ("sunlight"), "ride" ("fly")...
I made this video using pictures I took, except the Mark Brown photo (from a Wash. DC paper) and the one with the little hungry birds on it (source unknown).

These are Donovan's lyrics:

Your smile beams like sunlight on a gull's wing
And the leaves dance and play after you
Take my hand and hold it as you would a flower
Take care with my heart, oh darling, she's made of glass

Your eyes feel like silence resting on me
And the birds cease to sing when you rise
Ride easy your fairy stallion you have mounted
Take care how you ride, my precious, you might fall down

In the pastel skies of sunset I have wondered
With my eyes and ears and heart stained to the full
I know I tasted the essence in those few days
Take care who you love, my precious, he might not know

  • Thank you. Newbie to Joan at 38. I'm learning a lot of music history. I must say, at 1:07 on this video, I see a bird that reminds me that anything can happen, do what you must. My opinion. I just was moved somewhere inside at a side glance of that pic. Thank you

  • @crowpass Yes, the picture of the bird has always touched me, don't know exactly why. It's a pity it's the only picture I didn't take... Thanks.

  • i just discoevred this song i am so glad i did i love both Baez and Donovan, thos brings tears to my eyes

  • @eleanor7rigby Yes, this is a gem. I remember being a kid and this song had something hipnotic to me... I was a strange child, anyway... Thank you.

  • As she has done with many Dylan songs Joan Baez interprets great songs very well. Donovan should be pleased, despite Joan's changing some lyrics. Sometimes that is necessary to help the other singer convey their message and interpretation. The changes did not change Donovan's message. I'm not a big Joan Baez fan but when she does good she does it very good. This is excellent.

  • Turquoise......how I love the colour..and this song brings back memories of such a beautiful song, sung equally beautifully by Donovan as well as Joan. The lyrics are so poetic and the music just lovely. So short but memorable.......hurry along this Summer!! K xx

  • What we'd give to have Donovan a lot longer. Every word reminds. Especially when sung by Joan.

  • wonderful lyrics - wonderful song - love it

  • I love Joan Baez too!
