The busy road from Moxi to Chengdu led through Ya'an where we stopped for lunch. Exiting Ya'an, Mr. Wang pulled over by an impressive line of bronze statues alongside the highway. Ya'an was on the ancient tea caravan route that led from China to Lhasa.

Chinese porters would climb from the lowlands up to Kangding carrying huge loads of tea. The tea was then transferred to Tibetan yak caravans that took it the rest of the way to Lhasa. It took 40 days to make the arduous trip over 1,800-2,000 kilometers and the expressive bronzes showed how difficult this trip was.

  • Butter tea doesn't knock my socks off and I like black tea.

  • Video was short, but sweet! I could go for some of that Tibetan tea. Did you ever try to butter tea? I understand it is an qcquired taste. I think it would only leave me thirstier, and I'm used to tea with sugar in it, not butter and salt, but one day, I hope to be able to try the real thing!
