Your biggest accomplishment is lying on the couch for eight hours solid. You lick my face, you lick the couch, and you lick anything else thats close to your face. You know no etiquette. Sit is something you do for two seconds while somebody puts your leash on. Down is something you do when somebody hollers it three times successively, each time growing louder. The closest youll get to heel is at the end of a six foot leash, dragging someone behind you as you chase a squirrel up a tree. Leave it and No sniff dont exist in your world where everything that smells interesting must be eaten regardless of the outcome.

Theres no pressure with house dog, no commands, no responsibility but more love and patience than youll ever see. No ribbons, no titles, no listing in the annals of time. She takes her turn, her treats and her petting. Selective hearing is her way. Weve walked hundreds of miles together, and flown thousands more.

House dog youre the perfect first dog, the one that all other dogs will be measured against.

This is my last gift, the final peace I can give to you.
