Two vehicles collided head-on July 24 about 3:52 p.m. on Highway 299 about one mile east of the intersection of Highways 299 and 89. A 17-year-old Burney driver in a white vehicle traveling east decided to place the vehicle in neutral in an effort to coast down a hill and conserve fuel. The automatic transmission was instead placed in reverse, causing the rear wheels to skid. The driver lost control, skidded onto the right shoulder, over-corrected and steered into the westbound lane where it struck a 52-year-old Arcata driver and her 14-year-old male passenger. All three persons were wearing seatbelts and treated for minor injuries at Mayers Memorial Hospital.
