what the hell is this fish

I bought this fish when it was about 2 inches. now it's about 3.5 to 4 inches and this is what it looks like. if it gets a scare it changes color very quickly to almost black. what's going on here? It hasnt laid any eggs so i'm pretty sure it's a male.
the sign on the tank at the petstore said "Flowerhorn Cichlid" so.... is this actually a flowerhorn? is it an ugly one? will it morph into a beautiful pink fish? do I have a dud? the camera made my fishie look a lot pinker than it really appears. is it a trimac? I'm going nuts trying to figure out if i've gotten ripped off here, and if inevitably so, what kind of fish (Or flowerhorn) is this??? Youtube is AWESOME! thank you guys!!
