Wild's Eric Nystrom fractured Oilers' Taylor Fedun's right femur

On September 30, 2011, the Minnesota Wild's forward, Eric Nystrom, made an irresponsible play caused the injury of the Edmonton Oilers' defenceman, Taylor Fedun, which results of a complex fracture of his right femur.


Nystrom's post-game reaction:
"I feel awful," Nystrom said. "He was really hurt and I had obviously no intention of ever, ever doing anything like that. I was just racing for an icing and that's one of those freak things that happens in those situations and it's why people always say that rule (should be changed to no-touch icing). If I didn't think I had a legit chance at the puck I would have never raced in there but I just thought I had a good jump and I could maybe get in there. ... I feel terrible. So bad right now."


Nystrom's statement after he visited Fedun in a local hospital:
"It doesn't feel good to know that you're involved in something that hurt someone so seriously," Nystrom said. "All last night, all today, I feel like I can throw up. But he really appreciated me stopping by and I really appreciated him being so understanding. It's just a play that we've done so many times, just racing for the icing, and it's just one of those times that it turned bad. It stinks that something like this had to happen."

"No matter how many times I say sorry, he'll still be in the spot that he is. It's just a tough thing to be a part of."


Ducks' Kurtis Foster's statement:
"To be honest, I was hoping and wishing I would never have to see anyone go through what I had to recover from. I really hope this will lead to the changes of the icing rule that need to be made!

"Touch icing is a dangerous play that is not needed in our league and maybe this will open the eyes of the NHL and the NHLPA. A fractured femur for the second time is awful, but let's hope nothing worse happens to somebody someday!"

"It's been at least 12 years I've been going nuts on it, I had to stop showing all the examples of it. I was making kids sick. How many guys had to retire because of it, because they've never been the same since something like this happened to them?

"I don't get it. For the past five years, I've been getting calls from guys who say they've never been the same. I don't get that some people think it's an exciting play. Now they want to reduce injuries? This is an easy one.

"It's always a chickenshit forward who won't go in first and a guy like Fedun who ends up getting hurt."

That's nice you're just getting into hockey and you enjoy it so much that you talk on the internet like you've actually played in a league, but don't tell people THEY know nothing about hockey. Nystrom put his stick in between Fedun's legs right at the boards because he lost the race. In a fucking pre-season game too. If you've ever played organized hockey you would know to never do that. It goes without saying.

I'm an oilers fan and I have no negativity towards Nystrom. Shit is gonna happen when 2 players are racing at full speed towards a solid object. It wasn't anybodys fault. Just an accident. The NHL is trying to stop headshots because they cause concussions and potential brain damage. Well this causes broken legs and career ending plays. Change the rule.
