The very first episode tells the origin of UNCLE LON and features a voice message concerning "THEY" and their plans for LON. Apparently, they've been spying on him...

"United States Air Force captain Lon Kosminski's military career came to an abrupt halt August 17, 1969 when the fully fueled wing of a B-52 bomber fell on his face. When the captain emerged from his coma three weeks later, army doctors were startled to learn Kosminski was no longer himself. He had aged 25 years, begun collecting disability and was leaving his estranged family members incoherent phone messages."
