Preserving oil pastels is similar to preserving oil paintings with the use of a varnish to protect the surface of the paint. Preserve oil pastels with tips from an artist in this free video on painting.

  • Is there any way to speed up the drying process? I did a painting as a gift and I've never worked with oil pastels before. I didn't realize it takes so long to dry before you can varnish them. I want to ship the painting but won't do so until it's protected. I did it on gessoed masonite board using oil pastels and blended them using gumtine. I'm happy with the results so I hate to accidently ruin it.

  • What about the varnish that comes in the spreying can ? Can we use that for oil pastel ?

  • Great video about how we should move the brush when it's time to apply varnish (or any uniform layer of anything, for the matter). What kind of varnish, why, how much, what for, when, etc. are trivial questions that can be answered looking elsewhere. Another hit from expertvillage!
