You can use a multi clamp (SC-GRSMC), memory lock (SC-GRSHML), and a tom arm. We just uploaded one of a series of videos on tom mounts. I'll post the first one here in the video repsonse.

Removing the mount from your bass drum will not damage it. As far as sound goes, it depends on if you are going to add muffling to the inside and add a port hole to the resonant head. It might cut down on how the drum resonates if you are planning to play it like a tom. If you choose to go this route, patching the holes up will keep the drum resonating as much as possible. If you are planning to add muffling and a port hole on the head, it really will not matter.
