Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: I've played guitar for 7 years, but recently, I've started to study jazz. I took lessons with a jazz guitarist for around six months. And now, through learning some of the jazz Real Book pieces, I more or less understand the basic chords, and the standard jazz harmonies. However, I'm very curious about a concept called passing chords. My guitar teacher couldn't really explain them to me -- but I was hoping you could perhaps do an overview about it. Your explanations are always very clear and I'm hoping you can shed some light on this important topic for me. Thanks for considering my question!
- Tyler, Nebraska

A: To use Passing Chords effectively, I'd highly recommend that you eventually learn all of your seventh chord theory, theory on harmonized scales and you should have an understanding of; diminished 7th's, secondary dominants and relative major & minor principles in music. Getting into the theory about why these chords work the way they do is an onslaught of theory, because they mostly operate as various substitutes for other chords. So, the purpose of this video will be to get you going on trying some passing chords and to help you to have some simple fun with applying them in common harmonic situations.

  • @kodyjewellmusic then why are you watching jazz theory videos?

  • @andrisc I have been playing for 2 years aswel. It puts me on a complete downer when I see some 18year old outplaying me. Wished I picked up the guitar when I was a kid, i was always interested in guitar all my life but I chose a skateboard over a guitar (worst thing I ever did)

Breaks my heart too. I'll never stop playing though.

I'm literally about to pick up my guitar again right now.
