Science fiction can help get you involved in economics. In Asimov's Foundation novels, a group of social scientists control everyone in the galaxy, and economics was the best way to do that. Economics gives you a way to think about what is happening in the world.

It helps to have mentors when you are young. There is a difference between the amount of gasoline consumption among different countries.

In grad school, one of the underlying rules is that you won't end up working on what you thought you would. International Trade seemed like an interesting question. Before, the international trade theories revolved around geographic advantages. You have to think about large companies and the advantages to scale. It seems natural now, but it was a radical notion at the time.

It is hard to believe that you have won the Nobel Prize. You might think that it is a practical joke. You need to learn what you are good at and stay away from those that you aren't. If you are a fast writer, then can can be a valuable skill.
