"Jingle Cats" creator Mike Spalla knew a good thing when he first saw it in the early 1990's.
[Mike Spalla, Jingle Cats Creator]:
"Originally it just started from the cats meowing at me while I was playing music. And so I started to hear their meows as musical notes and started recording them and set them to music. And people thought it was funny. I just look for things that I think are funny."
After gaining serious popularity all around the world, Spalla has brought the cats and dogs back into the studio for a new recording. The album, First Meowel, features ten songs sung by the cats with back up from the Jingle Dogs.
[Mike Spalla, Jingle Cats Creator]:
"Well we just signed a record deal with Universal for eight countries. Hong Kong, Taiwan, a whole bunch of countries and also Korea. It's been extremely popular in the United States and Canada and Japan and Germany and Denmark and all of Europe. So it's kind of going through the whole world now because of the Internet.
The Jingle Cats and Dogs are no strangers to the camera. Spalla released a DVD of the performances last year. It features nine singing "Cats" and their background singers, the "Jingle Dogs.'"
The Los Angeles-based sound engineer has also made a deal with Hallmark for the cats and dogs to cover "Happy Birthday" on more than 500,000 greeting cards.
The new release, First Meowel, is available at www.jinglecats.com and on iTunes.
