@OsbornTramain The Edsel was Ford's DeSoto? Maybe that isn't so far fetched. I think in 59 they tried to bring it down market a bit, the economy wasn't so hot at the time, and the 58's didn't exactly fly off the lots. In bringing it down market, they were competing against themselves, and the 59 Fords were, at least in my opinion, a whole lot better looking and they didn't have the Edsel stigma. I do wonder how the Comet would have done as an Edsel, which it was originally designed to be.

As an auto collector and historian, I always read that people were confused by Edsel and didn't understand it's place in the Hierarchy of cars...Caddy and Lincoln at the top with Ford, Chevy and Plymouth at the bottom. Their identity was muddled? Now after seeing this commercial, I totally get it. How in the world could they run this ad? They were trying to cannibalize their own sales from Ford. Have you ever seen GM market a car against one of their own models? Buick vs. Oldsmobile?

My dad bought one in 1958, and finally gave it to Old Miss in 1973 when i blew the transmission. He was mad at me, and it still hurts in 2011. We loved that wonderful car.
