This video, originally produced by Greg Oates in 1993 features a very different view of the retirement of Sydney's red Rattlers and subsequent rebirth into heritage operations a few years later. He later released this vid using copyright free music - however IMO this original version portrays the mood much better. Included is the only known footage of "the claw" cutting up a carriage at Redfern. Warning to all rail fans and especially spark fans.. this one will make your heart bleed. The sight and sounds are guaranteed to leave you determined to "do something about it".

  • Not gonna happen laddie. I created HET.. and I know far more about it than you can possibly imagine..

  • Actually they are in the custody of a group known as Historic Electric Traction. Sadly, they don't seem very interested in running them and would rather just have sunday afternoon picnics.

  • Hey does anyone know what the tune playing is?

  • I was there as a bystander on the scrap roads in 1992, watching the destruction of these fine trains. It was a very sad sight, and even 18 years later is still chilling. :-(

We can thank the Media and our guttless Politicians for this. :-(

  • It's hard watching 60 years of history and millions of kilometres of railway service just get destroyed like that. Mind you, the day they start cutting up the Tangaras should be a public celebration with free viewing!

  • @zordmaker

And, all that's left of a total fleet of 1,465 cars are 26 red set cars and 11 silver set cars.

  • @FiloKuyaBaliw

Taken on a Saturday in July 1993. I'm the one who videoed the scrapping.

  • @CMCHRYSLERVALIANT

There are some survivors, Dean, but not able to run due to public liability issues drawn up by the former Labor state government. However, they are still being maintained by a group of volunteers waiting for that day wnen they will return. They're in excellent condition.

Please check out my earlier reply of all the cars preserved.

Cheers......and thank you so much for your interest.

  • @gregbassace1 I've actually had plans drawn up to do that with a Tangara non control carraige, Except with the bedroom upstairs due to the curve on the upper windows. Just awaiting one to come up on tender as the council A-OK'd it. Except planned with Solar power (have a mate that can make the custom solar panel to mould over the roof where the old Air con unit used to sit above the door. been planning it for about 4 years now just have to grab the carraige now for it to happen)
