For the third year in a row, we have conducted a survey of the state of health of .SE (Hälsoläget) by looking at certain selected activities and the nature of quality and accessibility in the .SE domain name system, along with several important parameters for quality and security in e-mail and Web services. We also present some current statistics from other tools that we have developed for the benefit of Internet users, such as DNSCheck, for example.

This session also includes a brief report on the telecom sectors Telö 09 crisis management exercise, where Internet-related issues were included for the first time in the planning.

Moderator: Tomas Gilså, freelance writer and information security consultant

State of Health 2009

How the new DNSCheck works

Many Internet-based systems are dependent on DNS functioning, but DNS is fundamentally quite an insecure protocol. For this reason, good tools are needed to monitor the infrastructure for DNS. With its open source code project DNSCheck, .SE is attempting to create a powerful yet flexible tool for checking DNS delegations.

Experiences from the Telö 09 exercise

In May 2009, the electronic communications sector conducted a crisis management exercise. The scenario was based on a number of terrorist-attack-like events that would lead to major disruptions in the electronic communications networks and society as a whole. In recent years, exercises like this have been conducted in Sweden every other year. New for this year was that a number of players responsible for various parts of the Internet in Sweden also participated.

We describe the scope of the exercise, and what it's like to design an exercise with Internet-related events. We also give a picture of how the exercise went, and what the players participating in the exercise got out of it.
