I've always considered myself a hard man, and no, I didn't cry at this scene, but no scene has brought me closer to it. The only types of stories that bring me to that point are stories of people who are strong where I am weak, who deal with hardships that might easily break me, who break themselves to fortify others, who see the world in fuller ways than I. What Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis have depicted here is a man who is all of these things. Character is not determined by intelligence.
