This project is highly synergistic with VicHealth's priorities in the areas of health inequalities and ethnic and race based discrimination. It will involve analysis of data from four existing surveys/research studies concerned with Indigenous children and young people to explore the relationship between exposure to self reported discrimination and health.
The Chief Investigator is internationally recognised for his expertise in this area (being the author of the most recent peer reviewed systematic review on this topic) and has close links with international teams including the team led by Professor David Williams (Harvard University).
This study will complement an existing body of work being supported by VicHealth and others to address ethnic and race based discrimination and other social determinants of health in Indigenous communities.
While the link between discrimination and health is well established internationally with adults, this project will add to the small body of Australian literature on health and discrimination and the international literature investigating impacts on children.
