Let's face it, Asians love sob stories. You won't have to look hard to find it in our dramas, music, and films! Tragedy permeates our culture like MSG and rice. But what about our televised talent shows? Certainly, these shows aren't scripted at the least, right? And most certainly a talent show is the last place you'd expect to find tragedy. After all, it's about laughter, excitement, and entertainment! Right?

Think again. When it comes to Asians, nothing is exempt from tragedy. We love it extra-tragic with a side of tragic. Consequently, Asian talent shows love to portray contestants as underdogs. Why? Because tragedy sells! But they do it so much that these shows go from being a talent contest, to being a sob-story contest. It's not who's got the most talent, but who's got the saddest life story.

Asia's Got Talent? Definitely. Asia's Got Tragedy? That's a tautology.
