Recently addopted a GSD (yes he is a GSD). He is 5(ish) years old. He is not affraid of any human, loves every one he has come in contact with! IS however affraid of balls and frisbies, but loves stuffed toys. If I roll a ball towards him, he will jump out of the way of it. Today a 7 week old puppy scared him and he hid behind me, and then hid behind the owner of the puppy (he does work well with other dogs his age). I admit that for a GSD he is not protective, just wants protection. just saying

@HecklingGopher Ok her father is a police dog and he is the protective one and her mother just walked up to me and sniffed me and licked me lol....so who knows how shes gonna turn out.
I just got a female German Shepherd are they as protective as the males?

@djkissbird Yes they can be! However, it really depends more on genetics than anything else. They can be trained to learn to be protective, but it gives them a headstart to have it in their blood.

That's not a dog being protective. It's a dog that wants to perform a territorial display but is afraid of what you are going to do to it if gets louder.

@mstrhck Hehe, he doesn't have any reservations for getting loud. He will bark his butt off if he so chooses. Yes, territorial agression, call it what you will. It doesn't matter though where the dog is though, he will do his "keep away" thing. He woulda made a great stud had he not been fixed.
