Have you ever thought about the cube? What you could do is make it so that you can skin the companion cube as the activated cube, and the normal cube as the deactivated cube. Make it so that (I'm not good at mapping, so sorry if this isn't correct) you have a trigger brush. I think you have to put in the outputs "onstarttouch" make it change the skin. Then have an "onendtouch", make it change back to normal.
I've considered using a Portal 2 style cube skin with the light blue ring and making the cube light up orange when activating something. But this map is staying Portal 1 style so not doing that quite yet.
