Part 2. Classic Game Room HD reviews DARIUS GAIDEN for the Sega Saturn video game console. Do you hate fish? Well blow them up with a space ship and laser beams!! Darius Gaiden is a side scrolling horizontal shoot em up on the Sega Saturn released by Acclaim and Taito for the United States market. Many of these horizontal shooters were only available in Japan, but this one came over the pond to the U.S. of A and we're thankful, because IT'S AWESOME. This is a SHMUP that shows the 2D gaming potential of the Sega Saturn in all its glory, and is a darned challenging video game that will keep you busy for hours on end. Even on Easy, this game will bring you to your knees with lightening fast enemies, walls of alien fish bullets and end bosses that shoot all kinds of crazy things at you. Darius Gaiden is also cool in that it has many levels and you can play it like a "Choose your own adventure" and pick the path and levels that you would like to play. Robotic fish, giant squids and tentacle sponge things that shoot alien killer bubbles? Yes, they're all here in this one of a kind SHMUP on the Sega Saturn. How could the Saturn have died out as quickly as it did when games like this were available??? Darius Gaiden is a must have for fans of the SHMUP genre of video games. Space ships, laser beams, evil fish and explosions. Holy great fish sticks, this game rules! This game should be remade at once for Xbox Live Arcade XBLA or Playstation 3 PS3 network, although it looks amazing on the Saturn, I think a new generation should experience this enjoyable and challenging game.

An interesting gameplay element not covered...

The mid-way bosses in levels can be "captured" and will fight for you. When you see the enemy units carrying a blue orb, shooting the orb a few times before killing said enemy will have it detatch from the enemy, and float to the middle of the screen. Touching the orb will have the enemy ship fight for you for a while, but it will delf destruct before reaching the boss.

If only you had gotten to Zone Z', you would have seen the boss with the greatest name ever.

Hey I played Darius 2, it is my favourite Saturn game, and if you upgraded the silver shield you would get a golden shield, which could take around 9 hits, I don't know if it is in this game also but it must be.
