Judicial Oath of Office
28 USCS 453

Each justice or judge of the United States shall take the following oath or affirmation before performing the duties of his office:

"I, (Name), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will administer justice without respect to persons, and do equal right to the poor and to the rich, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me as (Office) under the Constitution and laws of the United States. So help me God."

"I simply do not know exactly what the difference will be in my judging. But I accept there will be some based on my gender and my Latina heritage" Judge Sonia Sotomayor
- Judge Mario G. Olmos Memorial Lecture in 2001, delivered at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law

"I willingly accept that we who judge must not deny the differences resulting from experience and heritage but attempt, as the Supreme Court suggests, continuously to judge when those opinions, sympathies, and prejudices are appropriate."
- Issues Facing Latino Judiciary symposium sponsored by the Berkeley La Raza Law Journal, October 2001

"I wonder whether by ignoring our differences as women or men of color we do a disservice both to the law and society."
- Issues Facing Latino Judiciary symposium sponsored by the Berkeley La Raza Law Journal, October 2001

"I further accept that our experiences as women and people of color affect our decisions. The aspiration to impartiality is just that -- its an aspiration because it denies the fact that we are by our experiences making different choices than others."
- Issues Facing Latino Judiciary symposium sponsored by the Berkeley La Raza Law Journal, October 2001

"All of the Legal Defense Funds out there -- they're looking for people with Court of Appeals experience. Because it is -- Court of Appeals is where policy is made. And I know, and I know, that this is on tape, and I should never say that. Because we don't make law. "
- Duke University panel discussion held in February 2005

"Whether born from experience or inherent physiological or cultural differences, a possibility I abhor less or discount less than my colleague Judge Cedarbaum, our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging."
- Issues Facing Latino Judiciary symposium sponsored by the Berkeley La Raza Law Journal, October 2001

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasnt lived that life."
- Issues Facing Latino Judiciary symposium sponsored by the Berkeley La Raza Law Journal, October 2001

  • Who cares? Her entire point is that PERSPECTIVE matters! What should anyone care that a Latina is on the court? Antonin Scalia is on there, and he hates FREEDOM!

  • no decision should be based on ethnicity or gender or religion

    just law and ethics

  • If laws are made by a minority with only there interests in mind, What difference does it make who enforces or judges them. If the law itself is unjust, it is still a law and will be enforced. It is all a dog and pony show. Again to keep the majority divided. so the united minority can continue to rule us by any meens they see fit.

  • Dude! How can you misspell SO many words but spell 'fucking' correctly? Use Spell Check or at the very least buy a goddamned spelling primer or a children's dictionary

  • This video is so hilarious it's mind boggling, hint hint conservatives, recognizing experiences make you a better judge is not "racist". Also, in the Ricci case she ruled on precedent, it would have been activist for her to rule in favor of the firefighters since she was an appelate judge, not a supreme court judge.

It's funny how conservatvies think the judiciary is just a rubber stamp robotic institution, maybe some of you should study a little law before making idiotic video's like this.

  • i dont give a fuck about ehtics, heritage, or age. What we need on the suprememn court are people that can interpret the law without bringing these issues into their decision. Sotomayor has talked for years against the very virtues that our supreme court justices must have and now shes gonna have a spot? This is fucking rediculous

  • i agree to some extent. However, dont you agree that ethics are based on morailty, and upbringing? There are diff. types of ethics & the type of ethics a person chooses to use is based on there culture, thoughs, ideas, background ect...........to some extent

  • I do not like what I see. Obama does not love the free United States of America like we love it. He wasn't even born here. His view point is that of Jealousy, and hate. He wants to cut down our pride... Make us all equal, make our nation equal to all other nations. Of course he would appoint someone like Sonya Sotamyj;kljdfiouer.

  • EXCELLENT!

  • Did she take an oath to tell the TRUTH in her Senate Confirmation Hearing ??

  • Excellent and thought provoking video. Funny how such things get overlooked by the media. 5*
