WASHINGTON, D.C. - The only serving U.S. senator to have flown in space called on President Obama to use $3 billion of unspent stimulus money to help prevent the continued shrinking of Americas space program. Florida Democrat Bill Nelson delivered an impassioned speech on the Senate floor coming just days before a special commission reviewing NASA and the nations space program is expected to deliver its final report to Obama. http://billnelson.senate.gov/news/details.cfm?id=318789&

  • Exactly right, jjlucash, the stimulus money could fund NASA the $3 billion extra per year it needs, for 262 years.

  • what private space companies ? the ones who can put 1,000 pounds into orbit, maybe ?

  • Augustine committee did not fault the Constellation program, by the way.

  • Bill Nelson is good, wish him, and us, much luck !!! we are on the brink and it is not good.

  • People act like NASA gets hundreds of billions per year just because of rockets, research and robots. Get this: SEVENTEEN billion last year...compared to a $787 billion pork bill (stimulus), and a $410 billion omnibus spending bill (more pork) last year. Now, which one is the waste of money? Hmm?

  • mmm mmm mm

    tax tax tax

    mmm mmm mm

    spend spend spend

  • What part of " we can't afford it " do you not understand.

Name one dividend from the space station (black hole).

  • I completely agree with this.

  • The sooner space travel goes private, the better.

  • We need to start sending probes to other regions of our galaxy, sooner rather than later. Thank you Senator ! All our greatest technology comes from space exploration...and the worlds greatest future technologies will also come from Space Exploration.
