The jazz flautist you heard was Mario Darpino. Heard him play with Charlie Byrd at the Showboat Club in Washington DC in the mid 60s. He was terrific.

1967? American Embassy Seoul Korea, I was invited to have drinks and conversation with his trio at an embassy official's apartment. They were doing a tour for the US AID department, Charlie, his brother on bass and a flute player, can't remember his name...Mario? I'll never forget the evening... Thanks, Peter Y.

I would always ask Charlie to play this anytime I saw him in person, which was quite often. Yes, he was the BEST!

This guy's the reason I play guitar. His style encompassed classical, jazz, blues, bossa nova. Probably one of the most under-rated contributors to American music there ever was. I had the privilege to see him in both concert hall and small club settings in the 70's and 80's. I actually spoke a few words to him after a set that contained an absolutely awesome rendition of "Body and Soul".
