  • @Yoshaorlow Enka (spelled "演歌" in Kanji) is popular music particularly based on Japanese traditional culture, sense, emotion, and so on.It is sung in a unique way called "Kobushi"...Hmm, It's difficult to explain well. You can find many examples if you search with the keyword "演歌".

  • @SuperNF2010 I seek music by keyword. I think this kind of music have any culture. I hate russian Enka - Шансон, (from french word Chanson) - city romantic ballade. For exemple search in Youtube "Rada Rai"

  • I am a Japanese but actually hated Enka music like this one... However, Pink Martini's performance is very very cool. My impression about Enka has changed.

  • @SuperNF2010 What is Enka music?

  • This is a fantastic rendition of a Japanese love song, considering It is uncommon to hear this music outside of Japan. We have been inspired to record a condensed version of this delightful tune with just Accordion, Guitar Flute and percussion. Thanks to Pink Martini our audiences love the tune, it is also popular on or Japanese clips on youtube. Peter Rappolt... Viva the band Sydney Australia

  • @peterrappolt

Pink Martini have fantasic sense of national culture.

  • Her name was Kikuchiyo Across the nape of her porcelain-like neck The night-club's blue light swayed I held her as we danced I felt her gentle shoulders tremble Why this sadness... why this sadness? I wish it could have gone on forever Together passing time in Akasaka In a hotel on that misty night We spent the night in passion And then... the blush in her tender cheeks Turned to tears... lonely tears
  • Her name was Kikuchiyo

    Telling me to forget everything

    Our only night together

    She vanished

Leaving only her sweet scent lingering softly

In the fog... in the fog

    Her name was Kikuchiyo

  • they have such bad pronunciation of U

  • @SuperNF2010 Thanks for the information, Super!

  • The original version performed by Hiroshi Wada & Mahina Stars back in 1963 is extremely obscure and hard-to-find in Japan and never available on CD. The single(Victor VS-903) was flopped and most of Japanese people don't know the original version・・・But recently I have got the 10'' LP "Miwaku No Chorus Vol.17(Victor LV-331)" which includes the original version of this song.

By the way, Hiroshi Wada & Mahina Stars were a very successful Hawaiian-styled Kayokyoku band.

  • @GuruGuruHHH Sorry I misunderstood, I thought this song should be an Enka because it sounds like traditional Japanese scale... Anyway, the song itself concerns more popular thing, rather than tradition, as you say.

  • This song is NOT categorized to “ENKA”. It’s “Kayoo-kyoku”. Kayoo-kyoku is more popular. ENKA is close to Japanese traditional folk song.

  • @KadhabraSpells yeah that is Koto(琴) . More precisely, it is called Sou(箏). I glad you like it!

  • @SuperNF2010 So I guess you might as well tell us the name of that amazing string instrument that opens the piece? :-)

  • 菊千代さん・・・、ですかぁ。聴衆は意味は判ってないよね。でも、いいものは良いと認めているんだろうか。

  • しかしまぁ、よくこんな歌引っ張り出してきたこと(笑)

    その着眼点は実に面白い;

    再発見です。

  • Wada Hirosi stuff was categorized as "Mood Kayou", not Enka.

It Is difficult to explain about how different they are though.
