Here we have the American Male Soprano Michael Maniaci singing the aria "Ah se a morir mi chiama" from the second act of Mozart's "Lucio Silla." Giunia has ben threatened by Lucio Silla, who wants to marry her, and she fears for Cecilio's safety. She hurries to Cecilio and begs him to flee. In parting, Cecilio sings this beautiful aria assuring her that he will be faithful to her even in death. Like the motet Exsultate Jubilate, the role of Cecillio was written for the Castrato Rauzzini as pictured in the video. Hope you enjoy..
Music by : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791)
Male Soprano: Michael Maniaci
Orchestra: Boston Baroque
Director: Martin Pearlman
Text:
Ah se a morir mi chiama
Il fato mio crudele
Seguace ombra fedele
Sempre saro' con te.
Vorrei mostrar costanza
Cara, nel dirti addio
Ma nel lasciarti, oh Dio!
Sento tremarmi il pie'.
Translation:
Alas, if cruel fate
Summons me to death,
As faithful, guardian shade
I shall forever be beside thee.
I would fain give proof of steadfastness,
Dearest, at this parting,
But no that I leave you, oh God!
My footsteps falter.
Très belle musique et bien chanté! bravo AV

Very refined singing of the most subtle
expressivity! Maestro Maniaci has some
dynamic moments, but for the most part,
his interpretation lacks ardor and tends
to be soporific rather than poetic. His
tone and timbre are admirable as is
his vocal range! Wish I could be more
enthusiastic! Thank you for posting, Ken!

Enjoyable. I heard Michael Maniaci live singing this at the Santa Fe opera. One had to sit front / center in that large, open-air setting to discern the individual nuances of his voice in contrast to the other singers. Farther away, his voice sounded very similar to the female singers' voices, especially because of the similar vibrato and timbre. The original opera had most of Silla's arias removed, and Santa Fe eliminated another male role; therefore, there was little difference in vocal sound.
