Unless the reason for time travel is primarily benevolence towards a 3rd party then the attempt to time travel will always prove out to be self serving and self correcting.

if it is the case that it is the future us trying to come back (despite all the complications of that) there would be a handful of reasons for it:

1)They want to find something

2)They want to warn us of something (stop something do something that has triggered something really bad in there time

3)just to do historical research

I tend to think that its more likely its not us and it is ET, mainly because if they could time travel they wouldn't be so easily captured or obvious
