This bout is particularly interesting to compare with the Spear vs. Broadsword bout (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwcTZt-MZQ0) in order to see how two different weapon-systems use different solutions for the same problem. Elmo Mackay uses his Yang Style Taiji Spear against Chris Thompson's Yin Style Bagua Chopping Sabre. The "kandao" or chopping sabre is a short weapon with a long grip. Although it is often used with a single hand, the Yin Yuzhang lineage of Yin Fu Bagua includes two forms for using the chopper as a two-handed weapon. The leverage provided by this grip makes the kandao almost the ideal sword for facing a spear. This is part of the Bagua Historical Swordsmanship Project, a side-project of Cateran Society president Chris Thompson.
