I am not sure if you can use word "melancholy" in connection with this sublime music. One could say "meditative" or "inwardly-oriented" or even having a tinge of "Karuna Rasa", none of which has the clinical or European theory of humors kind of connotation about them. I think we have to start using words rooted in Indian aesthetics tradition while discussing Indian music and dance. The anthropologists use that technique--using the analytical categories of the tradition that they study.

@PieterdeRooijHolland you are right.... infact, Its VILAMBIT EKTAAL .. which is of 48 beats... most of the times vilambit ektal of 48 counts is used.. some times i have seen tabla payers playing VILAMBIT EKTAAL of 24 counts as well... thanx.. :)

She is such a virtuoso. I play Irish fiddle, but have always had a deep respect for this Indian playing. She is truly an ascended player. wow. Please post more of it if possible.

Kala is an accomplished violinist with magic fingers,
in 2007 July RagaRanga has produce her audio CD
of Raag pooriaya Dhanashri. It is available on e-bay or Amazon. It is amazing singing violin.
She is treasure of India!
Great sound. Even after being converted to mono and compressed by YouTube the mix is terrific. Of course it doesn't hurt to have such fantastic music as well! The clarity on the tabla is amazing. This tala is tintal, right?

Thanks for your nice response. The tala played here is not teentaal (16 beat cycle), but ektaal (12 beat cycle). Kala here plays within a very slow framework of twelve beats. The cycle moves very slow so the count is also veeery slow. Try it and you will find out it's a twelve beat-cycle that takes about 70 to 72 seconds here. For elaborating the slow part of a raag Kala often uses ektaal.
