Shanayim miqra 'aHhadh Targum, Saphorno - Reading each verse twice in Hebrew, once in Aramaic, and also in English with the commentary of Ribbi `Obhadhya ban Ya`aqobh Saphorno(Known as Seforno, Sforno, S'forno). By learning in this manner, we fulfill the instructions of the sages for completing the Torah portion of the week along with the congregation, as well as what was originally accomplished by the Targum Unqolos when Aramaic was the spoken language of the Jewish people, that is, understanding simply what the verse is talking about.
Why are we not doing Rashi? Usually the first commentary everyone reaches for, it turns out is not the first choice for our goal, which is the most practical, literal understanding. Since the intention of this video series is to offer this kind of window into the text for those of us interested in a very basic, first level Humash study, after seeking some very wise Rabbinical advice, we have chosen the commentary of the Saphorno.
