A song inspired by the May Day celebrations at Padstow in Cornwall where an ancient "Obby 'Oss" has for centuries been paraded through town. The words and tune, by contemporary songwriter Dave Webber, have entered the folk tradition.
Performed here by Magpie Lane and produced by Tim Healey.

I have chosen pictures to represent May Day, May Pole dancing and Morris dancing, I hope I have conveyed a picture story to the song that suits the First of May. Again I have heard Magpie Lane perform this at Bampton, Oxfordshire and in May but not on the first ;-)

I do not own the song, paintings or photos in this video. It is mearly an attempt tell the story of this song, prefomed so well by Magpie Lane. I have no connection with either Magpie Lane, Beautiful Jo Records or Dave Webber, other than listening to the CD's and being a fan of Magpie Lane and Ian Giles.

  • What a lovely band, I just made a video of my own for one of their songs.

  • @mbsjanetelizabeth Yes, that's correct. Both the song and tune. Magpie Lane are perfoming it the way it was written.

Sound's fantatsic live, I heard them at Bampton Church performing it, sublime.

  • This May Song was written by Dave Webber, wasn't it?
